Perhaps no night sky phenomenon is better-recorded than the Northern Lights in Inuit lore. While an estimated 95% of First Nation constellation stories fell into obscurity, Inuit elders and Royal Ontario Museum researcher John MacDonald collaborated between 1986 and 1997 to preserve hundreds of Inuit stories, including lessons of hunting, respect, and youth at play under the dazzling aurora. The result is The Arctic Sky: a 300+ page volume detailing the astronomical stories and traditions of the far north in what is now Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
